Performance
Althea Thauberger is a Canadian artist living and working in Vancouver. She is currently a PhD candidate in Communications at the European Graduate School.
Vancouver artist Althea Thauberger is creating a performance-based work, together with a group of ten new mothers and their infant children. The stylized interactions they will perform during the opening of the exhibition have been determined by discussions between the artist and the participating mothers. The project was initiated as a way to reflect on the Danish phenomenon of the Mødregrupper-small groups of women who meet in each others homes, selected by the public health nurses based on age, location, nationality and social position. Thauberger sees the event as both a potentially highly empathic and possibly stressful situation at the same time. The work addresses the fact that it is often considered unprofessional or overly sentimental for women artists to work with such subject matter.
